Hero of the Trip

Nick is my hero of the trip. Not only did he do an excellent job of figuring out where all the things we wanted to see were and how to get there and the ordering of when to do what, he also arranged for us to have a Thanksgiving meal. It gets better... He cooked enough dishes to make up for all of us coming [Derby pies, sweet potato casserole and deviled eggs (ok I got to help a little)]. He also drove us around and figured out the metro and how much we needed. Basically he took care of all the details of our trip. I can't imagine what it would have been like if he had not done all that. First off we would have spent so much more time trying to figure out where things were or we would have just got off the metro and hoped we found things we wanted to see. He also did a great job of maneuvering to get us in another lane when the bottoms of the barrels suddenly appeared in our lane.

As if all of that wasn't enough to be the hero of the trip, he also was so nice to take me to buy a pair of black pants when I realized I had left mine at home. So he drove Lindsey and I to the ghetto mall. She ended up not finding a shirt but I got some pants. Then when we went to the Cheesecake Factory I was inside the booth and I wanted to know what Peanut butter chocolate chip cookie dough (or something like that) cheesecake looked like. He went and took a picture of it so I could see it so that 4 people wouldn't have to move for me to get out. How sweet! Then to top the night off he and Patrick went to get the van to pick us up so that we didn't have to walk in the rain in our heels.

I'm sure there are plenty more reasons why he should be the hero of the trip, but there's a few of the highlights. Lots of people did some great things on the trip so he wasn't uncontested but I think we'd all agree that he deserves the award.

Quotes from the Trip

There were so many funny quotes from the trip. Here's some of the ones we were able to write down:

  • "I am the mother." -Patrick
  • "I'll be your gentleman." -Ashlee
  • "You won't be my harem anymore?" -Patrick
  • In response to confirmation that there are cameras at the white house: "So, be cool" -P
  • "You have got to stop that!" SLAP! -Lindsey
  • Lindsey: I felt a hand on my butt and I thought, "That better be Peng"
Nick: I was thinking that earlier.
  • MK: Patrick, you look smart.
Nick: In that new mother sort of way.
  • "Konichiwa!" -Nick
  • "I have weird friends." -Nick
  • "Blah blah blah" -P's translation
  • "Tiger Woods!" -Random man on the street as M walked by.
  • "I have a slidey butt." -Lindsey
  • "Martin, you like tacos don't you?" -Patrick
  • "It's gonna eat me!" MK's thoughts upon the escalator fall
  • "#@^+!" -P (sorry I don't have Chinese characters available to type it out)
  • "Either that or I'm Usher." -Patrick
  • "Score!" or "Score 2 points!" -Too many people to know who to say
  • Lindsey: Meatloaf... Mom
    Mary K: Sunday
  • "Pull a paper!!" -Peng and occasionally others

There were so many more funny quotable quotes however I didn't have a recording device to record them all, nor could I write fast enough to catch them all. Anyway, it was a great trip and I can't imagine it without everyone who was there.

Made it Back

We all made it back from a great trip. I'll be sure to write more soon. Just wanted to let everyone know we're home. It was awesome! Thanks to everyone who helped make it what it was!

To DC

So the journey has begun. We're here at my dad's house and tomorrow we'll be on our way to DC. I guess I should get some sleep so that I'll be of some use driving tomorrow. So good night!

The Lights Are On!

The lights are on my tree now! Woo Hoo! I'm glad I didn't have to wait another week!

Poll

So Patrick is selling his wisdom teeth on eBay so if anyone is looking for some extra wisdom, there you go. So I wanted to take a poll... what's the weirdest thing you've bought or sold on eBay? For me I'll have to think about it. Maybe it's that squirrel puzzle I won... Anyway, Sorry I don't have fancy polls like Chris plus it's not something you can choose, you have to tell me. :)

South And Central America

If Africa was too tough, try this one. I got a 96% (I missed El Salvador somehow). Have fun!

20.11.04

UK 77 Coppin' State 46

Thanks to my dear friend Robin I was able to attend the season opener for UK. We were sitting in the worst row possible (one more row back and you at least have a wall to lean on), but I've been against the wall before too... I really don't mind it's still fun to be there and be able to yell as loud as you want to without worrying about waking up neighbors. Despite the large difference in the score, it was still an interesting game. I couldn't believe how many jump balls there were! Man, they were not giving up that ball! There were also a good number of steals and 3's to keep it exciting. Overall it was a great time. My only complaint is the music they played when they turn off the lights to announce the Cats. What's up with that? It just didn't give the same chills and excitement as before. I hope it's not a permanent change.

Phone

So apparently my phone number was mistakenly flagged and thus all the hassle trying to "go orange." I didn't really like the whole "going from blue to orange" talk but after many hours and phone calls and even a few real people (I was on hold for one hour and 20 minutes waiting for a person before I had to hang up once), They've fixed my account so that I can have nationwide calling w/ 600 daytime minutes with AT&T and then in a few days I should be able to "migrate" to Cingular with my number. Shew! This better work! I do NOT want to have to call AT&T's number again!

19.11.04

Cell Phone Companies

Is it just me or does everyone have problems when they're dealing with cell phone companies? I currently have AT&T service and now that they've been officially bought by Cingular, I wanted to change my plan so that I could get the mobile-to-mobile minutes on my plan. The website tells me to go to an AT&T store so that I can change my phone and service. Then you click on the store locator and it lists Cingular stores. So I decide to go to the mall so that I can go to either store I need to. The AT&T booth is now a Cingular booth. So I talk to the guy and realize I'm going to have to do a new contract (yuck!) to get all the features. What was the point in fulfilling my contract if I am stuck with it? Anyway, I pick out a phone and we're ready to "migrate" my account and then he tells me that he can't do it I have to call this other phone number because my number is under some business sales group thing... I ask what that is and he says it's for people who get a discount on their accounts with their employers. I inform him that does not apply to me (and I confirmed it with my mom) but he says he's sorry he can't help me I have to call this number. So I call and for the first time (and I've talked to a lot of phone people) the guy is actually nice! I had prayed about this twice today b/c I know how irritated I get with the phone people. I'm not sure what frustrates me more: getting as many different answers as people I talk to or those stupid automated voice things that never offer the option I need and won't let me just get to a real person.

Anyway, so I wait on hold and I finally talk to the nice guy only to discover that he cannot access my account because he doesn't deal with GSM services. So he gives me another number to call after apologizing about the fact that I'm going to have to wait again! Argh! Well, hopefully I'll get to talk to someone before the night is over. So far I've been on hold for 14 minutes. Maybe they should hire me. I know all the different lies to tell the people who call and the "lines" to give them when I don't know how to fix their problem. If this doesn't work I'm just going to cancel my account and get a new one. That would be the easiest in some ways. I think that the time I'm on hold trying to solve this is much greater than the time it would take me to call everyone I know and give them my new number. So if you get a call from an unknown number, it might be me calling to give you my new number.

Hero of the Day

I just want to declare Patrick my hero of the day. He's my hero today for a few reasons, one of which being he did the African Geography thing at level 8 and scored a 75% on his first try! He really is an expert Geographer! Anyway, I just wanted to declare him the "official" hero of the day.

This is Your Life

This song has been in my head the past 3 days... It really hit me the other night when I was driving home,
"This is your life, are you who you want to be"
I've heard this song many times before but for some reason the other day that line just spoke out to me. As I looked up the lyrics another line caught my attention too,
"Yesterday is a kid in the corner; Yesterday is dead and over"
It was a reminder to me to forget about the past it's over. I just need to make the most of today and realize the past is over. I'm really bad at carrying guilt from things in the past but this was a good reminder to me that it's "dead and over." I'm often convicted of not allowing Jesus' blood to be sufficient for me. Ok, that might not sound right... but I often am guilty of not believing that it was sufficient because I hold myself under the weight of my sin instead of realizing it's paid for. With the whole school thing this was a good reminder. Anyway, "This is your life, are you who you want to be?" If not, what do you need to change?

African Geography

Well, if you enjoyed the US State map puzzle thing on Jeff or Chris' blog, maybe you'll enjoy this. I know I did! Here you can start at whatever level you think is appropriate and work your way up. I have a feeling I'm going to play on this site for a long time!! Next week we'll try another continent. :)

Accountability

After some thoughts of things I've read on various blogs, I decided I'd hold myself and my readers accountable. If you're reading blogs and you haven't had a quality prayer time, stop and spend some time with the Father now.

Indian Wedding

Yesterday one of the ladies in my Ladies Group brought her pictures from her wedding. Wow! They go all out! I can't even begin to describe the intricate decorations they had. The car was covered with this net looking thing with flowers on it that matched the decorations inside the houses as well. Another thing that I found interesting was that they sit down during their ceremony. The priest, the bride and the groom are all sitting down. Anyway, it looked like a beautiful, interesting experience. Sometimes I think it would be fun to incorprate some wedding traditions from arount the world into my wedding. I figure if I'm going to spend that much money on something, why not go all out? Or maybe not... Anyway, I've got a few years before I will need to think about that...

Chosen

First I just want to say that I was super excited to see 3 International students at my church today! Now, onto the purpose of this post...

My pastor started a series on "Election" (not the voting kind). I've missed parts of the series but I picked up the notes. Tonight he had a demonstration that really demonstrated a great point. He asked two different youth to come up to the front. He gave one girl a dollar and the other a quarter. Then he asked them how the felt and asked us if we thought he was fair. After some of the reading I've had to do I knew the point he was making so I guess it was good that he didn't choose me. Anyway, most thought he was not fair. But then he talked about how neither of them had done anything to deserve anything so both were a gift. So how can we say it's not fair if none of us did anything to deserve it. Anyway, it's something to think about. If you'd like to read more on election here are some scriptures to read:
Romans 9:13-17
1 John 5:19 (well, this talks about how we aare influenced by Satan)
John 15:16

I'm suyre there are many more but the point tonight was that God is free to give whatever to who He wants to. I'm so glad He chose me!

No School

I have never let my schooling interfere with my education. - Mark Twain

Too bad I didn't have Mr. Twain's advice sooner! I read this quote on Chris' blog and I thought, "Good point!" As many of you know I struggled over whether to go to seminary this past semester a lot! Well, I went, even though I had this feeling that it wasn't the right thing for me to go. Basically I haven't been trusting God with my future and I've been disobedient in some other things He's asked me to do because I've been trying to go to school when it's not His will for me to go right now. And boy, the past week or so since I made the verbal commitment to not go to school (wait is that a commitment?) I've felt like such a huge burden has been lifted off me. I've even shed tears from the joy I've felt inside knowing I'm getting back on the path He has for me. I often wonder what could have been if I'd been obedient but I know that I can't change the past I can only live in the present; I hope to live for Him and do His perfect will instead of what makes sense to me.

I also want to thank all of you for putting up with me during this time. I know I've not been all that I should be during all of this. I hope that I can somehow make up for what I've not been doing right in the future. Thanks for your endurance.

Tim Tams

So when I came back from Australia I couldn't find Tim Tams anywhere. Today I looked online and thanks to Froogle, I found two sites that sell them for $3.50 a package. I didn't go far enough to see what shipping is, but they are both sites based out of the US so it shouldn't be too bad. Anyway, I wanted to post this so that when I finish off my tim tams (which now I'll be less of a hoarder), I can find them easily. Plus, I know some of my readers might enjoy this information too. So here are two choices of where to get them:
http://about-autralia-shop.com

If anyone else is interested we could all go together on our order to save shipping costs. :) Ooh! We'll have to have a tim tam toast at my Christmas party!!

God is in Control

Last night on our way to school Chris was driving. It was misting outside so you couldn't really see real far in front of you. We noticed something on the right side of the highway but couldn't really make it out until we got right up beside it. We were in the left lane and we realized it was a car that had flipped over and looked to be drug apart a bit. Chris said he saw someone on the ground. We almost stopped looking at this site that must have happened right before us only the mist prevented us from seeing it. Two or three vans pull over to the side as we were making out the figure on the side of the road. Then I turn and look behind us and see a semi coming down our lane. I said we need to get over. Chris quickly checked the other lane and pulled over. The semi was driving as far off the left side of the road as we pulled over. I'm not sure how close it came because I didn't look anymore but I just remember saying, "We need to get over" and praying that we didn't get hit by anything. Wes called 911 to report the accident and then we slowly drove the rest of the way to school.

After seeing this we began to talk about car accidents we'd been in or heard about. It was a HUGE reminder to me that God is in control. One of my "worst days ever" was one of the experiences I shared. I'm going to retell the story just to show that God is in control.

We on our way back from a retreat a few hours outside of Caracas. Kathleen was driving. I was in the front seat. In the back seat Milagros was behind Kathleen, Amy in the middle and Jennifer behind me. It had been raining earlier so the roads were wet and in Venezuela that means you might not have the best traction. As Kathleen attempted to pass this car a truck came around the bend up ahead. Amy saw it coming and yells, "Oh, $#!+!" Then she follows that with, "Sorry!!" and about that time we are hit head on by the truck that I didn't even see coming. So the airbag was released on impact. The next thing I remember is I couldn't feel anything and all I could see was this foggy white so I thought, "Crud, I'm dead!" Then I hear someone open my door and ask if I'm ok. I wasn't sure what to tell them because I couldn't feel anything or see anything. Lots of people got out of their cars to come see if the Gringas were ok. In Venezuela they aren't just rubber neckers, they get out of their cars! After we all get out we begin examining each other and Kathleen had some bad chest bruises and Milagros and Jennifer have bruises on their arms from Amy but for the most part we're all ok. My biggest injury was from the airbag hitting my face. I had a cut on my eye lid and it busted my lip and face. So my left side of my face was in a lot of pain and stinging but other than that we were all ok. Praise the Lord! So then we had to all go to the police station. There wasn't enough room for all of us to ride in the other two vehicles so Roland was in charge of getting the r of us that lived in the same part of town home. So we walked from the police station to the main road to try to catch a bus but we were too late to get one so Roland tells us, "Don't ever tell Richard about this, but I think we're going to have to hitch hike." So here's a young man with 4 young girls (Amy, Jennifer and I who were in the wreck and Beth who lived at the same house as Jennifer). Eventually this man driving a pick up truck with his little girl stopped. Roland asked them about where they were headed to see if we could get a ride. We were all comforted by the little girl who made it feel a little safer to get in the truck. So the five of us get in the back. We're kind of laughing only I can't really laugh b/c I can't move the left side of my face. So we're sitting back there talking and then it starts to rain again. So now we're hitch-hiking in the rain. Then the man inside the truck reaches us a table cloth. So we cover our heads with the table cloth (I have pictures if you want to see them) to keep our heads dry in the rain. Who carries a table cloth in their truck? Only God could have arranged that! Finally we make it back into town. We're at this read light across the street from the metro stop where we'll get out of the truck. We look behind us and see Richard the team leader driving up behind us! We were like, "Oh no! Now we're going to be in trouble for hitch-hiking!" Luckily we weren't. I guess he was just glad we were safe. So we get out of the truck and go to the metro to head home. Then we all realize our pants are still wet from the water in the bottom of the truck. The metro was also cold. So now we have been in a wreck, we look like we wet our pants and it's cold! What a day! We're all laughing at our situation. Then we get off the metro and ride the bus home. Amy and I decided we would just walk up the mountain to our house rather than getting a taxi for the rest of the ride home. As we're walking up the hill/mountain we're beginning to recount our day. At this point we no longer found it funny and we both start crying. What a horrible day! We get home and we tell Suzanne, the lady we were living with about our day. It was no longer funny, but we were very amazed at how God had provided for us. Amy's quick reaction saved Milagros and Jennifer a lot of pain; the man having a tablecloth in his truck kept us from being drenched. It was a rough day, but God is in control.

Happy Birthday Elizabeth and Jennifer!

Happy Birthday to you! Happy Birthday to you!

Motivation

So I think I've thought of a way to keep my links under "Blogs to read" active. I'm going to edit my order of my links and those blogs that are updated less often will move down on the list and those that are updated regularly will move up on the list. If I was really bored I'd go and count the # of posts and stuff and determine who really goes where, but I'm too lazy/busy for that. So instead, I'll just guess by how many times I can remember going to your page and thinking, "still nothing new!" At the bottom of the list will be those of you whom I have to check to see if I need to remove your link because I don't want inactive links!! You know who you are and so does most of my readers. ;) If ever it seems everyone is posting well I'll just alphabetize them. It was bugging me that there was no real order other than the order I added links anyway. So start blogging!

Public Confession

So I've been really stubborn and I wouldn't sign up for a Xanga account in order to comment because I'm just that stubborn. First it was just Lindsay's site so I just would comment to her via other means. Then it was my step sister, and now I've learned of a few others. I decided that it'd be much easier for me to just give in and sign up for an account than to try to "convert" every Xanga user I know. Besides there's just been a few times when it was killing me to not be able to comment! So, apologies to all of those people who have blogs on sites that require your visitors to sign up for an account to comment that I've complained about in the past. It's not your fault your blog host is a tyrant... or is it? Anyway, Xanga bloggers better keep posting!

Tired=Bad!!!

I probably shouldn't even be writing this right now because I'm still tired, probably even more tired. It seems that when we become tired we tend to say things we might not normally say, act irrationally, be very impatient, short tempered and judgmental. I have done all of those things as a result of not being well rested this weekend. To all those I have been impatient with, acted rudely, thought bad things about, said bad things to you or about you, or just encouraged gossip or any other offensive behavior that I might have done, I apologize and seek your apology. I hate it when my attitude becomes "ugly" like it has today. I'm sure I'm going to wake up in the morning and be very angry and upset with myself. Hopefully I can find all of the people I've offended, or been short with or whatever and make things right. Please pray for me as I seek reconciliation and rest. Lala salama!

6.11.04

Wireless

So I'm sitting here in Cave City, which is kind of like being in the middle of no where... but here I am in the Cave City Convention Center and was checking something on my computer because some students need to use it and what do you know.. here in the cave city convention center there's wireless internet. Now I need to go to my family group.. bye!

Local issues

Well, I talked to my dad about the mass transit vote and after talking with him I realized that the lady was partially right. He said (of course with more detail) that some cities like Ashland use money in their general funding to pay for it but then there's lots of restrictions on where the transportation runs (ie. only in the city limits) and other places, like Lexington where it's money from a tax that runs it. He said that can be good because then there's someone in charge who sort of runs the system (unlike Ashland where no one is really sure who's the ultimate boss who overseas all the details). He also said it may not have been an increase, that they just have to pass an amendment every so often to keep it going.

Anyway, to make a long story short, I wanted to change my vote but of course that was too late. Luckily "Yes" won, despite my vote.

In other local (but less localized) news, the marriage amendment passed. I was a bit surprised to see that 42.72% of Fayette Co voted no (48,843 votes). We were the highest "No" vote percentage. I had expected Jefferson Co to lead in the "No" votes. They had 39.64% (125,525 votes), which was the largest number of people voting No, but there are more people who voted yes. My old home county was 80.67% in favor of the amendment. Only 3,747 votes (at least one of those was a misunderstanding- my step mom) against it. If you're interested in how your county did, click on the title.

Now, I just pray that the rest of the results go well.

I Voted

And I have the sticker to prove it. I thought I'd go vote around 10 am because I figured then the "on the way to work" crowd would be gone and the lunch time crowd wouldn't be there yet. Well, that must have been a common thought because there was a line. And it was even longer when I left than when I got there. I think it was only about 30 minutes or so that I had to wait. I'm glad I wasn't there during a long line.

I woke up this morning with a "nervous stomach." At least that's my diagnosis of my upset stomach. I can't decide if I'm nervous because this was my first time to vote and I just feel such an overwhelming responsibility to choose wisely or because I was nervous that I wouldn't know what to do or what. Or maybe it is because there are so many important issues being voted on that it concerns me. While I was standing in line the lady behind me explained the Mass Transportation vote as "voting on whether or not to continue to have mass transportation or not." However I read it as whether to increase property taxes in order to finance public transportation. So I started wondering if she was right and that it was a either we increase property tax and continue or we end it, or if that was just her interpretation. I'm in favor of having public transportation I just don't feel that it's the property owners who should pay for it since a large number of the people who use mass transportation are not property owners. Granted there are some, but wouldn't it make more sense to just increase the fair? I think I'm going to call my dad and talk to him about it since he's the "Mass Transit Supervisor" for the city of Ashland... he should know how it works. I just wish I'd talked to him before I voted.

Ramadan Prayer Guide

Yeah! I finally found (ok, I finally remembered to look for it online) the IMB's Ramadan Prayer Guide. Please go to this site and read and pray for the Muslims of the world as often as you can!!
